September 29, 2008 - Freshmen Representative Positions

Dear Honors College Freshmen,

The Honors College Advisory Board (HCAB) is looking for two motivated, outgoing, and energetic freshmen to fill the two freshman representative positions for this upcoming year.

HCAB is the student-elected council that serves the HC student body by coordinating programming ideas and activities, providing resources and benefits to the HC community, as well as serving as advocates on behalf of the students. Some of these activities and services include our annual Honors College Ball, Honors College luncheons, tutoring services, volunteer opportunities, and various socials and outings.

If selected as an HCAB Freshmen Representative, you will become a full-voting member-at-large and join the other current 15 members. More importantly, as a freshmen representative you will be able to voice the opinions and interests of your entire freshmen class. Freshmen Representatives will be expected to attend HCAB meetings every other week, work office hours, as well as serve on two standing committees (Ball, Fundraising, Activities, Student/Fellow, Publicity, Luncheon, and Tutoring).

We encourage everyone to apply! We are not necessarily looking for the most decorated or impressive candidate. Rather, we are looking for the people who would fit in best with the rest of HCAB. We are looking for qualities like enthusiasm, effort, and teamwork. Becoming a freshmen representative is a great way to get involved, meet new people, and learn more about the college and the university. Also, it can count as your Honors activity for the spring semester!

The application process is a two-step process. The first step is a paper application, which is attached to this email. Hard copies can also be obtained from the Honors College front desk. The paper application includes some biographical information, and a paragraph about why you would want to join HCAB and how you would contribute. The paper applications are to be submitted to the Honors College front desk no later than FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10 at 4:00 PM. Due to the large number of anticipated applicants, we will not be accepting any late applications. After review of the paper applications, a number of the candidates will be selected to be interviewed by current HCAB members. The interview is very informal and is just an opportunity to get to know you as well as to learn more about your interests and ideas for HCAB. After the interviews are conducted, two candidates will be selected to fill this year's freshmen representative positions.

Freshmen representatives will be selected by the ninth week of the semester (Oct. 20-24), and they will be expected to attend their first meeting on the Thursday of that week (Oct. 23rd).

If you have any questions about the application process or about HCAB in general, please feel free to contact me at blin6@uic.edu.

Good luck to all the applicants!
Sincerely,

Brian Lin
Honors College Advisory Board President

March 20, 2008 - 2008/2009 HCAB Elections

The Honors College Advisory Board (HCAB) is preparing for the next academic year by beginning elections for the 2008-2009 HCAB.  If you enjoy working with other students, are returning to the Honors College (HC) next year, and are seeking a challenging and rewarding leadership opportunity, then you should consider running for a position on the Board!

The HCAB was created in 1983, at the inception of the HC itself, in order to serve as a body of student representation advisory to the Dean of the College and its faculty executive committee, the Honors Council, in matters regarding the academic and administrative procedures of the HC.  It has played an extremely important role in its growth and success over the past 25 years.  Participating in the advancement of the College as a member of the HCAB is a serious leadership commitment that is both valuable and enjoyable, and we hope that you will consider contributing your efforts to ensure its continued success.  Please note that serving on the Board requires a time commitment of several hours per week.

The HCAB consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, as well as 11 Members-at-Large.  More information about each position can be found here. The HCAB is responsible for representing the students of the HC, and also plans activities for them, including the Annual Honors College Ball, the semesterly Faculty-Student Luncheons, Guest Speaker events, and New Student Days.  HCAB also provides valuable services to all members of the UIC community by overseeing the HC tutoring services.

In addition to gaining valuable leadership experience and invaluable networking opportunities with students and staff, participation on the HCAB may also serve as an HC Activity for the spring semester of next year.  Newly-elected HCAB members will be required to attend a training session to be held Tuesday, April 22, at 5 p.m. in the Honors College.

To make your candidacy official, you will need to submit the following items by FRIDAY, APRIL 4, at 3 PM.

1. The 2008 - 2009 HCAB Application (click to download). The application includes a brief (about 100 words) statement. Please note that this statement will be made available to all HC students on the HCAB voting website where they will cast their ballots. Please complete the application and EMAIL it to uichcab@gmail.com.

2. The enclosed HCAB Nomination Form (click to download) for 2008-2009, which must be PRINTED OUT and signed by 10 members of the Honors College.  Please return your completed nomination form to the Honors College front desk in Burnham Hall.

3. A digital photo, which will be displayed on the Honors College bulletin board during the week of the elections (April 8-10).  Please EMAIL the digital picture file to uichcab@gmail.com.

Voting for the 2008-2009 HCAB elections will take place online, via the HC homepage, from 12 PM ON TUESDAY, APRIL 8, UNTIL 10 PM ON THURSDAY, APRIL 10. All HC members are eligible to vote for their student representation.

Good luck to all running in the HCAB Elections!
